Fried Beef in Soy Sauce Gravy Recipe (Semur Betawi)

Ingredients :

Beef, thinly sliced

Sweet soy sauce

Margarine

Shallots, finely sliced

Salam leaf (or bay leaf as substitute)

Nutmeg, bruised

Cloves

Cinnamon stick

Piece mace

Tomato, chopped

Fried shallots

Salt

Garlic

Chopped ginger

Candlenuts

Coriander

Cumin

Peppercorns

Method :
  • Combine beef with sweet soy sauce and mix thoroughly.
  • Set aside.
  • Heat margarine and gently fry shallots until golden brown.
  • Add ground spice, salam leaf, nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon and mace.
  • Fry until fragrant, then add beef with sweet soy sauce.
  • When the ingredients are cooked, add water to cover beef.
  • Cook until meat is tender and the gravy has thickened, then add chopped tomato.
  • Serve hot with a sprinkle of fried shallots.

Optional : An additional 300 grams potatoes, quartered and fried until golden brown may be added after beef is tender. Beef can be replaced with fried bean curd and chicken.
